I grew up in NY when the lower east side was door to door used bookstores, even B&N sold used books. The towns here have B&N, Books a Million etc. The paperback used stores are mostly romances. The only decent used bookstore is in Ft Lauderdale and the books there cost almost as much as new ones. But, tonight I found the most fantastic used bookstore. It's on Spanish River and I only take that street when I'm on the way to my mom's. It even smells like an old bookstore, rugs on the wooden floor, old bookcases and books stacked everywhere. And one very large not overly friendly cat. He doesn't move, you have to step over him.
I bought 10 books, most were $5, some $10, all art books, all out of print, all hardcover. They have a huge selection of art books. I bought Illustration Annuals from the 1980's, one is for European illustrators, the collected works of Aubrey Beardsley, 1966 edition of Artist's Proof - a journal of printmaking published by the Pratt Graphic Art Center (really like this), Drawings by David Levine (signed by the artist) and a huge book on Milton Glaser. One of the annuals had a torn binding and they gave it to me because they said it shouldn't have been out there like that. And they have a whole section for museum and exhibition catalogs. And I also bought a book of Daumier drawings. They had a whole set, different categories. The one I bought was $5 and the others were between $25 - $35. I set myself a limit, nothing above $10 so they were out. Oh and they had a series of Japanese soft cover gorgeous little books on textile design. They were $30 each so they really were out of the question.
I think this counts as a very good excuse for not drawing tonight. And the salesperson said they had a whole shipment just in of art books but no place to put them yet. I volunteered to help put them someplace, yes I did.
