Mom Dots

I have to do this one over again.  I really messed up the nose.  Her nose is going one way and she's going the other.

 

Me and Mom

I'm 5 or 6 here on a row boat with my mom, trees in the background. I like it but it looks vaguely like a mini Mt Rushmore. To make sure I didn't draw right to the edge, I taped some paper down on all 4 sides. It's 8 1/2 X11 cardstock.
 
 

Pin Up Mom

I couldn't think of what to get my mom for mother's day until West Coast Jane suggested I draw mom. Actually, she said Draw Her! Well ok. The pix was b&w and pretty old so not very clear. I'm not very good with details since my eyesight isn't so good either. Using photoshop elements I upped the contrast until the photo was really b&w and drew from that. It's on letter size paper. I started with a sharpie but soon ran out of ink so switched to black prism marker. I'll have to print this out to frame it because I drew to the very edge which is a bad habit I have. And this paper is just 28lbs so it started to warp a little and so I left some of the black parts white. Of course I signed my real name because it is for mom. This is actually my third attempt. The proportion on the other 2 was really off. I drew and inked the head and then started on the body. The last one I just drew all the outlines first and then inked it. I'm not so good at likenesses but this really looks like her back then. I think I'll try the pix I posted of my mom and dad together next. I think I have to get some more black markers.

 

Pin Up Girl

This my mom, 1942. She said it was a photo for my dad in the army. He never made it overseas. He was drafted, went through bootcamp. Then an exam showed he had a heart murmur and he was 4F. Why they didn't find that before bootcamp is a mystery. He spent the war years in Baltimore building ships.

Heart's Delight

I couldn't get a good picture of the finished quilt. The colors are much brighter than the photo. Here's the first pix I posted.

So quilt #1 is done. It's about 36" x 45" and I used a combo of different pinks for the binding and I mitered it too. Mitering is one of those things that you just can't see how you can do it. Then you do and it's the simple thing possible. And I used a blanket stitch on the binding. It's all machine stitched My first quilt class was for hand quilting and I learned something very important. I don't like to hand quilt. Too much blood leaking from the needle pricked fingers. After the 2nd class I went out and bought a sewing machine. On to quilt #2.

Here's the back. I wanted it to be reversible. I improvised the back panel there which might turn out to be the quilt #2. Yes, that baby is going to have a quilt for every day.

 

Back detail. I diagonally quilted one direction and then the other to get a diamond pattern. 1 1/2" between the lines. I like tight quilts. I think they wear better. I'm going to wash it a few times so it's nice and soft before shipping off to my niece in NY, She's going to bring it to the baby shower. It's my nephew that's having the baby :D

   

Great Auntie's Quilt #1

Or Great Nieces' Quilt #1. What's keeping me busy lately. I ordered these fabrics on line since most of the quilt stores here have closed. Bright colorful fabric called Nicey Jane (appropriate name there) and a few of Riley Blake's. It's a reversible quilt. I used that pink and red fabric with the white flower on the back with a band of improv blocks down the vertical side. I'm quilting 1.25" between each row, diagonal both ways to get a diamond pattern. Finished it will be about 36"x45". Then I'll wash it a few times to get it nice and soft. I've finished the diagonal one way, tomorrow the next direction and then the binding which maybe solid lavender. I have heard from a very reliable source (my niece) that the mom to be would like lavender and pink. Quilt #1 is mostly pink. I need to finish it by this weekend to send to NY for the baby shower. Then on to the 2nd quilt which I'll take with me to NY in August. Then there's all the softies to make. Since they live in NY there are future flannel quilts and maybe a few felted sweaters. The possibilities are endless. I think I might be busy until she's in college. Being a great auntie is certainly going to keep me busy.
