My blog is almost exclusively about my artwork. I try not to write about what's going on in the world because..well the internet is rather a scary place and people can go really crazy about things. But I just watched the news and I had to say something about this because of my Great Uncle Sam (yes I had an Uncle Sam).
The Republican Presidential front runner's idea of a mandatory database of Muslim Americans and special ids for Muslim Americans is what brought back memories of Uncle Sam.
I haven't thought about him in forever. He died when I was very young. He came to America after WW2. My only memory of him is of us sitting at my Aunt Ida's kitchen table. We always sat at her kitchen table. She was a great cook. My mom said she was the only one of the 4 sisters that could cook. So I remember sitting there listening to them talk. I couldn't understand any of it because they spoke in Yiddish. What I do remember are the faded numbers on Sam's arm. When he saw me looking, he pulled his sleeve down. I didn't know what those numbers meant until I was older.
So now we have one Senator who thinks interment camps are a good idea and a presidential candidate who wants special ids for American's of a certain religion. We all want a safe and just world. I'm not sure how to get to that world. But I'm pretty sure repeating the past (which didn't work well for anyone) is not the way to get there.
I can only hope that when it is time to vote that we move beyond our fear and vote for the idea of America. I know when I vote I will be thinking of the number's on my Great Uncle Sam's arm.
